Individuals' eating behaviors are influenced by environment, culture and personal aspects, among which are predispositions to food intake, known as appetite traits, which can lead to an individual being susceptible to the development of obesity. In young adults, it has been observed that those with a high Body Mass Index (BMI) show consumption based on food availability, emotional overeating and enjoyment of food. Hence, through a cross-sectional analytical study in university nursing students from a public institution in Oaxaca, Mexico, who answered an online questionnaire during January-February 2022 (n= 152), appetite traits were related to BMI. A significant correlation of r = 0.58 was found between hunger and food response traits, and weaker correlations between 0.26 and 0.50 between other traits. No correlation was found with BMI. It is important to conduct research with larger numbers of participants, to include equal numbers of women and men, anthropometric measurements by trained personnel, and to consider individual variability. The measurement of appetite traits is an assessment tool that should be considered in clinical interventions for the treatment and prevention of overweight and obesity.
